What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measurement of a person's leanness or corpulence based on their height and weight, and is intended to quantify tissue mass. It is widely used as a general indicator of whether a person has a healthy body weight for their height.
BMI Categories:
- Underweight: BMI is less than 18.5
- Normal weight: BMI is 18.5 to 24.9
- Overweight: BMI is 25 to 29.9
- Obese: BMI is 30 or more
Important Note:
While BMI is a useful tool, it has limitations. It does not directly measure body fat and does not account for muscle mass, bone density, or overall body composition. Athletes and individuals with high muscle mass may have a high BMI without having high body fat.
